The great outdoors

The Wales border is popular for walking, cycling, riding, fishing, climbing and canoeing, with the Brecon Beacons, Wye Valley and Mortimer forest all close by.

The River Wye

The River Wye is one of the most beautiful rivers in the British Isles and can be navigated, without restriction, for over 100 miles. There are some good walking routes that follow the river, or you can hire a canoe in Hay-on-Wye for the morning or a day and meander along at the pace of times-gone-by. The banks of the Wye are unspoilt and alive with wildlife. Herons stand at the water’s edge, swans glide past … and keep an eye out for the flash of bright blue as a kingfisher dives.

The Brecon Beacons National Park

The Brecon Beacons covers 519 square miles of moorland, forests, rivers, waterfalls and caves. The Brecon Beacons Mountain Centre is located 5 miles south west of Brecon, with visitor centre, café, facilities and superb views of Pen Y Fan and the Mynydd Illtyd.  A long-distance cycling route called the Taff Trail, passes through the centre and also the Beacons Way, which is a walk spanning the entire length of the Brecon Beacons National Park (100-miles in total).

Horse and Pony Trekking

The Grange Pony Trekking centre at Capel y Ffin near Hay-on-Wye caters for adults and children. The stables will provide you with a surefooted pony or cob to suit your ability, and all the necessary equipment; then it’s off into the mountains with your trek guide for the day, stopping at a scenic spot for a packed lunch.
